Did you know -
Standard American pattern files come in three grades of coarseness
(roughness): bastard cut is the most coarse, followed by second
cut, and smooth cut. The length of the file also affects the coarse-
ness, with shorter files being less coarse, no matter what their
actual grade. This is because smaller files are generally used for
finer work. For example, the least coarse teeth would be found on
a 4" long smooth cut file, while the most coarse teeth would be on
a 16" long bastard cut file.
